Make an opening ceremony invitation

An opening invitation is half celebration and half advertisement, and the balance is the whole design problem. Guests are being invited to a ribbon cutting; everyone else who sees it is learning that a business exists.

That second audience is the reason this card should be readable as a thumbnail. It will be forwarded through WhatsApp groups by people who have never met you.

What goes on the card

The business name, large
This is the one thing a stranger should retain. Everything else is secondary to the name being legible at the size of a chat preview.
What the business actually does
A short line under the name. “Dental clinic”, “Fabric and tailoring”, “Filter coffee and snacks”. Names alone rarely say.
The ribbon-cutting time
The moment guests are being invited to. If there is a muhurat, use it and say so.
Opening date and regular hours
The ceremony is one morning; the hours are what brings people back. Both belong on the card.
Address, landmark and a phone number
A new shop is not on a map yet. Give the nearest recognisable thing and a number people can call.
The chief guest, if there is one
Naming them raises attendance noticeably, and it is a courtesy to them to be announced.
Any opening offer
If there is a discount for the first week, that line will do more for footfall than the rest of the card combined. Give it its own space.

When to send it

  1. Two weeks ahead

To the people you actually want at the ceremony — family, suppliers, neighbours.

  2. Three to four days ahead

To local groups and the wider list. Any earlier and it scrolls away before the date.

  3. The morning of

A short post with the timing and the offer. This is the one that brings walk-ins.

Design notes

Use the business's own colours if it has any. An opening invitation that matches the signboard does a small amount of brand work for free.

Leave a clear space for a logo. If there is no logo yet, set the name in a single strong typeface and let that be the identity for now — it is better than a placeholder mark.

Contrast matters more here than on any other invitation, because this card gets forwarded, recompressed and viewed at a hundred pixels wide. Dark text on a light panel, or light text on a deep solid, survives that. Thin gold script on cream does not.

Which size to make it

  • Square invitation1080 × 1080 · 1:1The safest for forwarding — full preview in a chat, no crop on any feed.
  • Instagram story1080 × 1920 · 9:16For a status on the day, with the offer large enough to read in passing.
  • Landscape invitation1350 × 1080 · 5:4If it is going out as an email header or onto a printed banner.

Common questions

Is the opening ceremony invitation maker free?

Yes. Every template and every download is free, there is no watermark, no trial and no account to create. The editor runs in your browser, so there are no servers rendering your design and nothing that has to be paid for per invitation.

What size works best for sharing in WhatsApp groups?

A square. It shows in full in the chat preview, so people read the business name without opening the image — which is most of what you want from a forwarded invitation.

Should I include an opening offer on the invitation?

If you have one, yes, and give it its own line rather than tucking it into a corner. For a new business it is usually the most persuasive thing on the card.

Can I use it for a banner as well?

Download the PDF rather than the image. The page is set to the invitation's real size, so a print shop gets exact dimensions instead of having to guess from a screenshot. Choose a portrait or landscape format before you export, not a social one — a story is the wrong shape for a card.
