Make a housewarming invitation
A housewarming invitation has one job that no other invitation has: it is sending people to an address they have never been to. The address is not a detail on this card — it is the card.
For a griha pravesh there is a second thing to get right. The puja starts at a muhurat, and guests who arrive after it has begun will feel they have missed the point of the morning.
What goes on the card
- The full address, written out
- Flat or house number, building, street, area, city, pin code. Not a shortened version — a courier-grade address, because that is what people will paste into a map.
- A landmark
- New buildings are often missing or wrong on maps. One line — “opposite the Reliance Fresh” — saves a dozen phone calls on the morning.
- The puja timing and the arrival timing
- If the muhurat is 8.15 am, say so, and say when guests should be there — usually fifteen or twenty minutes before.
- When lunch is served
- Guests who cannot make the puja will come for the meal, and they need to know when that is.
- Parking
- Visitor parking, or the nearest place to leave a car. Almost nobody includes this and everybody wants it.
- Whether gifts are welcome
- “Your blessings are gift enough” is the standard phrasing if you would rather people did not bring anything.
When to send it
Two to three weeks ahead
Enough notice for a weekend morning, which is when most griha pravesh functions are held.
Three days before
A reminder with a map link. This is the message that actually gets people there.
The evening before
Parking and gate details to anyone driving in from outside the city.
